What loose carpet actually looks like
A wave across the room is not wear. It is slack.
Humidity off the Sound moves the backing, the foundation settles, and every footstep drags the carpet a fraction further from the wall. Left alone the backing eventually separates from the fibre, and at that point replacement really is the only option. Before that, it is an afternoon.
And this is what a rushed repair looks like.
Somebody else’s patch. The pile runs the wrong way, so it catches the light differently from every angle and reads as a square of the wrong carpet. Cutting the donor piece so the pile direction matches is the entire difference between a repair you cannot find and a repair you look at every day. It is also why we take the donor from a closet rather than from a remnant that merely looks close.

Most carpet was originally seamed with a standard iron, which is why those seams are the first thing to come apart. We use a radio-wave iron that heats the tape adhesive right through rather than scorching the top of it, so the join we make is stronger than the one the installer made. Most seam repairs are finished in under an hour.

Before a stretch, furniture needs to be at least five feet off the walls so we can reach the perimeter. We can move the heavy pieces on Teflon sliders for a fee. We do not dismantle furniture.

A power stretcher grips the carpet across the room and pulls it taut, then it is re-secured to the tack strips at the walls. That takes the slack out of the middle of the floor, which is where wrinkles and ripples show. It works on the whole plane of the carpet rather than the edges alone, so the fibres and the backing are not damaged in the process.
Three things, usually together. Humidity off Puget Sound moves the backing. Foundations settle. And heavy traffic drags the carpet slightly with every step. Poor installation and aging padding make all three worse, which is why a floor that lay flat for years can start waving in one damp season.
Yes, but not by cleaning the surface. Urine soaks through into the pad and often into the subfloor, so we lift the carpet and treat what is underneath with an enzyme that breaks down uric acid crystals and bacteria rather than covering the smell. Allow 24 to 48 hours to dry. Severe cases are better solved by replacing the pad at the same time.
We cut out the damaged section and seam in a donor piece taken from a closet, from under furniture, or from leftover install scrap. The donor is cut so the pile runs the same direction as the surrounding carpet, which is what makes the repair disappear rather than showing as a lighter square.
Stretching fixes carpet that has gone loose, so it addresses wrinkles, ripples and waves across the whole room. Patching replaces a section that is physically damaged, so it addresses burns, tears and pet damage in one spot. Some jobs need both, and we will tell you if yours does.
When the pad is compressed flat, water damaged, or holding odor that cleaning cannot reach. Pad is the cheap layer, and leaving a failed one under good carpet undoes the work above it. It is often replaced at the same visit as stretching or odor treatment.
